WOW! What an AMAZING day for the TechTigers! So much happened in one day that we are all still reeling from the excitement, adrenaline, and overall experience that is FIRST.
Ok, a basic summary of our day:
We arrived at the arena around 7:30 [doors/pits open at 8:00] and got the robot up and ready to go, as we were in the first match of the day [match 52]. We proceeded to complete both of our final two qualifying matches, winning both and ending with a final qualifying round ranking of 4th. [Also, our Safety Captain, Melissa Smith, was awarded as the Safety Star of the Day by the safety judges!]
Then the alliance pickings commenced; for anyone who may not know about this process, the top 8 seated teams go through 1 - 8 and pick their first choice for their alliance partners [1 alliance = 3 teams] then they go through again 8 - 1 to pick the third member of their alliance. Our team, represented by Melissa, chose teams 1270 and 86 to be in our alliance - and what an amazing job our alliance did, proceeding to win in quarter finals 2-0, semi-finals 2-0, and finals [for the regional win] 2-1. We, along with team 1270-The Red Dragons and team 86-Team Resistance, are the 2007 Florida Regional Winners!
That's not all folks. The award ceremony followed the final match and our team won the General Motors Industrial Design Award! After going through for the Regional Winners Award and taking lots of pictures, we packed up the pit, and had a brief debriefing. At this meeting, Tony, from Sonny's [our sponsor] announced that 6 months ago, the Sonny's executives, himself and Mr. Ellich [our mentor] had had dinner and Sonny's had promised that if we won our way to Championships, they would pay our registration - mission accomplished! After the meeting, we headed home. Be sure to check back in the coming week for links to video and for more pictures!
Team 1251 would like to thank teams 1270 and 86 for thier amazing performance and their outstanding teamwork - our teams worked well toegther and despite last minute technical difficulties, managed to pull through with a regional win. We would also like to thank our mentors, parents, teachers, our sponsor Sonny's, and everyone else who has helped us get to where we are - we couldn't do anything without you.
